After an intense sick day (read: almost 22 straight hours of sleep) I got up the energy to go see the famous Austin Bats before they migrate south to Mexico for the winter. My third graders are currently doing a bat unit and we spend at least an hour a day talking about the differences between micro and mega bats. I did not even know such a distinction existed and now Eric is sick of my daily bat updates over dinner.
Anyway, Austin is known for the biggest urban bat colony in the U.S. Experts estimate that there are 1.5 million Mexican Free Tail bats living under the South Congress Bridge at the height of the season.

Its a pretty big community event!
Sorry for the awful pictures but its a little difficult to capture thousands of tiny bats zooming through the dark sky...
This went on for a good 10 minutes before I was exhausted and we headed back home. I'm sure more kept coming though!

Look very closely at all those little black spots flying out from beneath the bridge
