I will have been in Harlem one month exactly by the time I leave. I have been told that one month now allows me to change my "I've been there" tag on my facebook map New York to "I lived there." So that means I am currently living in New York. Harlem. Spanish Harlem. I live with a friend and his family. I live across the street from a size massive catholic church. They have mass at 10am on Sundays. Ill be there sunday. Especially after being personally invited by the choir. I live next door to "Fisher's of Men" seafood restaurant. There are several of them throughout Harlem. I have never tried their food. I think I smell enough of it each morning to get a good picture of what fish in the morning must be. I always pictured living in New York as being like a Gatsby Party. So crammed with people as to be intimate; anonymous even. But its not. Its sesame street. Its a neighborhood the likes of which I have never encountered. I greet the same people every day on the street, on the stoops, in the deli. More people here can recognize me by their personal nickname than ever could in the 18 years I lived in California or the 2 that I lived in provo. I feel happy every time I walk out my door. I honestly don't want to leave. Theorists tell me that the honeymoon stage with foreign places ends after about a week. It hasn't ended 3 weeks in. Im still as in love with the place as ever. I crave grass and sunshine.
but so far central park has been enough to satisfy
