R.I.P. Leah Peach

On Friday our "class" pet passed on. Leah Peach was the hamster given to the science teacher I co-teach with. She had a giant cage stuck with twisty tubes and spinning wheels. My advisory kind of adopted her as well. She was a hit. So much so, someone had to be constantly guarding the cage so that some sneaky 7th grader wouldn't pull her out and pet her during class.

But on Friday after school, as we went to check on Leah Peach she was motionless. Co-Teacher and I thought maybe she was just sick but no such luck. Rigor Mortis had already set in and she was stiff as a board. We touched her and she fell with a thump to the other side. We decided a funeral must be had in order to give kids a chance to properly grieve. But where does one keep a dead hamster for 3 days??

The freezer of course! Don't worry, we wrapped her in saran wrap (lucky thing I'm the cooking teacher!) and put her in my cleaned out tupperware from lunch. And then stuck her in the freezer for some lucky, unsuspecting teacher to find next to her frozen dinner!
