Alright guys. Now I know you all have some favorite children's book or two that you have outgrown but still have lying around. Well here's how you put it to good use. Donate it to the book drive!
While visiting many of the inner city schools I found that there were very few truly fun books for children. Remember Eric Carle? Or Roald Dahl? My love of reading began with these books and I realize now that I was lucky enough to grow up with access to every type of book imaginable. But that's not always the story for many schools that lack the most basic resources. Its a travesty that so many kids do not have access to some of the most wonderful books out there, and especially at the age they are supposed to fall in love with reading.
So here's what we do. I am "holding" a book drive until May 15th. If you are in California my family is collecting books at Trajan Elementary and Bella Vista High School as well as at their home. I will be collecting books as well here in Utah. If you would like to help out please let me know. I am hoping to collect hundreds of books that can be distributed to some of the more under-resourced schools in Washington Heights, New York. I also plan to use many of them in my class (we don't know what exactly that will be yet) next year as I teach elementary special education.
Also, it would be great to see some books in Spanish. English is a second language for many of these students and books such as goosebumps in spanish are particular favorites.
THANKS GUYS!
