So long as these kinds of inequalities persist, all of us who are given expensive educations have to live with the knowledge that our victories are contaminated because the game has been rigged to our advantage. - Jonathan Kozol
I've been reading a lot of Jonathan Kozol lately. I think the latest events have gotten me a little nervous and I thought that some inspiration would calm me down. But I don't know how much of a "calming" effect it has had. Last night I tore through Letters to a Young Teacher and it made me more outraged than calm. I understood the whole "education gap" concept long ago but sometimes it's so easy to leave at just an idea. But it hurts to put names and faces to a problem. Like Eric's kids. Just hearing about the innocence of some of his middle schoolers brings me to tears. Their losing the little innocence they have so quickly. Writing about it makes it seem so shallow when it's really such a big freaking deal.
